Abstract: Traditional method of extracting honey leads to reduction in nutritional value and quality thus, a honey extractor; a mechanical device that extracts honey from its comb was designed and constructed using easily available materials. The main objective of this study is the development and performance evaluation of a honey extractor. The main functional parts of the machine are net frame, wire mesh (perforation size 5mm, constructed using 1.5mm thick stainless steel of dimension 180 x 225mm), driving shaft (20 x 50mm), driving gear (diameter 21 x 17mm), control lever or operating handle (made of iron rod coated with rubber material at the point of handling to facilitate the winding process) and basket (designed to hold and spin two honeycomb frames, constructed using 1.5mm thick stainless steel, dimension 180 x 255mm placed vertically into the extractor). The honey extractor is cylindrical in shape and operated by manually turning the control lever. The time taken for honey extraction had significant effect on the performance of the honey extractor; the machine capacity, efficiency and weight of honey extracted decreases as the time taken for extraction increases, optimum values of 91.2%, 8.68 kg/hr and 456g was obtained at 32 seconds of honey extraction for machine efficiency, capacity and weight of honey extracted respectively. The average values of weight of honey extracted, weight of honeycomb remaining after honey extraction, time taken, machine efficiency and capacity of the honey extractor after a set of five experimental runs were 416.2g (+ 32), 83.8g (+ 31.8), 44s (+ 8.5), 83.3% (+ 6.4) and 6.52 kg/hr (+ 1.4) respectively. The machine is portable and can be operated without any special training or technical-know-how, the machine also has the ability to preserve and leave the honeycomb undamaged after honey extraction.

Abstract: This study investigated the temporal/near re-occurrence of simulated phase variables in chaotically responding nonlinear Duffing oscillator using fractal dimension when excited harmonically. The unsteady and steady phase variables were simulated from three different initial conditions by the constant step fourth order Runge-Kutta algorithms while the fractal characterization was achieved by the box-counted method. A total of 8,192 boxes arranged edge-to-edge on the time axis and with equivalent size of simulation time step were used to store the simulated phase results that are within 0.02 tolerance limit relative to specified standard. However, the fractal dimensions estimate were based on 14-different resolution scales. The results show temporal distribution of simulated phase variables that shared qualitative and quantitative similarities with Cantor set. The estimated fractal dimensions were between 0.0 to 0.58 and 0.0 to 0.65 for displacement and velocity component respectively. The distribution of the estimated fractal dimensions shows distinct peak values for the initial conditions. The addition of corresponding peak values of the estimated fractal box dimension from the displacement and velocity components are 1.10, 1.09 and 1.12 for the initial conditions of (-1, 0), (0, 0) and (1, 0). These estimates can be used to predict the fractal dimension of the corresponding Poincare section to within 14.9% maximum absolute error.

Abstract: Rapid Land use changes in Netherlands especially in urban expansion and open agriculture reduction which are due to enhanced economic growth. This research was investigated the impact of land surface temperature on type of land use in Netherlands using remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and statistical methods. As land use change alters the thermal environment, LST could be a proper change indicator to show thermal changes in relation to land use changes. GIS was further applied to extract the coverage ratio of each land use in the context of LST pixels. Using correlation and linear regression this interrelationship was then quantified. Overall, the key results confirm that Build-up area and open agriculture has the largest LST difference between day and night values. Inland water has the maximum night LST, minimum day LST and the minimum LST difference between day and night.

Abstract: The study of the effect of real earning management (earning management through manipulation of real activities) on the company's cost of capital. When the company's management to achieve a certain level of earnings, changes the level of real activity unusually, management of real benefit has been done. In this study, manipulation in three sale activities, production and related activities in optional cost (expenses that are under full control of management, including cost of propagations and research and development expenditure) was considered. The impact of each on the cost of the normal share capital companies has been investigated. The overall goal of this research is to study the position that whether the real activities of the management of company (here the activities of sales, production and optional activities) in order to manage earnings, has a significant impact on the cost of capital of the company or not? To test the hypotheses is used multiple regression analysis with panel data. In this approach, the three bound approach, fixed effects and random effects, using the test pattern (in this study, Leamer and Hausman test) are compared together and the best model is selected. It is recommended that investors and creditors before investing in companies, pay attention to real earning management in companies to prevent the transfer of funds to the companies with low earning quality.

Abstract: Experiments were conducted at two locations during the 2010/2011 cropping season for early yam production at Owo in the forest-savanna transition zone of southwest Nigeria to study the effect of time [December (D), January (J), February (F) and March (M) and a Control – no mulch (O)] of siam weed (Chromolaena odorata) mulch application on soil physical and chemical properties, growth and tuber yield of white yam. Mulch material in form of siam weed reduced soil temperature, bulk density, days to 50% sprouting and increased soil moisture content, SOM, N, P, K, Ca and Mg, vine length, leaf area and tuber yield of yam compared with the control. Mulch application in December (D) significantly produced higher (p = 0.05) SOM, N, P, K, Ca and Mg, vine length, leaf area and tuber yield of yam compared with mulch application in March (M). Mulch application in December (D) increased tuber yield of yam by 44.4% at site 1 and 47.4% at site 2 compared with the control (O). Similarly mulch application in December increased tuber yield of yam by 26.7% at site 1 and 23.2% at site 2 compared with March (M) application. However, because mulch application in December is statistically similar to January (J) applications in term of tuber yield, therefore either of the two is recommended for yam production.

Abstract: The utilization of agro-processing by-products as a veritable source of nitrogen for vegetable production is being popularized. An experiment to determine the effect of rubber effluent as an inorganic fertilizer on the growth, yield and nutritional composition of fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis Hook. F) was conducted at Landmark University Teaching and Research Farm between 2014. The experiment consisted of four treatments which are: control, rubber effluent, urea, and rubber effluent + urea laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. Data on the response of the morphological traits such as vine length, number of leaf/plant, and leaf area recorded fortnightly 2 weeks after transplanting while proximate composition on leaf were determined after harvest. Parameters assessed were significantly (p<0.05) increased by the applied fertilizer types. Rubber effluent + urea had the highest vine length at 4, 6, 8, and 10 WAT, urea fertilizer, had the highest leaf number at 8 & 10 WAT, while the leaf area was highest at 8 & 10 WAT with rubber effluent + urea treatment. The crude protein (41.76 %) was highest plant treated with rubber effluent + urea, while treatment with rubber effluent has the highest % in ether extract (13.33%) and crude fibre (7.5 %).
