Abstract: Background: The aims of this study is to clarify hemodialysis related changes in liver function status in hepatitis C virus patients versus negative patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. Subjects and Methods: The study included 70 patients with history of chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis for more than 1 year ago: 40 Patients with hepatitis C virus are patient group, and 30 Patients without hepatitis C virus are control group. The study was performed at national institute of nephrology and urology, in Cairo. Patients were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination including blood pressure measurement, and laboratory studies including: complete blood count, Serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, Aspartate aminotransferase, international ratio, total proteins, albumin, urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium, cholesterol, triglycerides, virology markers using Enzyme Linked-Immunoassay technique over 1 year with 3 months between each one, and polymerase chain reaction for hepatitis C virus Ribo Nucleic Acid once allover the study. Results: The study showed no significant difference between patients and control as regard serum liver aminotransferases, albumin and international ratio allover the study, and all are within normal ranges, also 72.5%, 22.5% and 5% of patients group are in low, intermediate, and high viremia respectively, and with Comparative study between low, intermediate and high viremia as regard duration of starting dialysis (years) there is: highly significant difference between them, indicating that: There is inverse association with increase duration of starting dialysis there is decrease in hepatitis C viral load. Conclusion: Our data confirm that patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis with hepatitis C virus have normal level of liver aminotransferases, and low viremia in hepatitis C virus patients on hemodialysis is an important factor in maintaining them with in normal ranges, and this low viral load may be related to duration since starting of hemodialysis.

Abstract: This study evaluated the hematological and biochemical indices of pyrexic subjects using standard techniques. Results obtained revealed no significant variation between the packed cell volume and the random blood sugar of both the pyrexic subjects and the control group (P>0.05). However, an apparent statistical disparity was observed in the white blood cell counts of both the pyrexic and the control group with the pyrexic subjects having an approximately 20% percentage white blood cell reduction relative to the control group (P<0.05). It can therefore be concluded based on our research findings that pyrexia of bacterial origin have a statistical significant relationship with the white blood cell count and not any other examined hematological and/biochemical parameters.

Abstract: Monitoring and evaluation of environmental damage is one of the issues that the Commission's decision No. 7 as an example of direct damage. Accordingly, the cost of direct damage and depletion of natural resources will be payable. These costs include the opinion and assessment of environmental damage and reduce damage to the process of assessment and rehabilitation of the environment. In this article we try to answer the question whether these costs can be considered as part of the damages or not; because it still has not been proven damages in certain areas. However, the Board of Governors of the costs as directs costs, and not even indirect losses. Due to the amount of compensation claims, environmental claims and received, compared with the total volume of the proceedings of the Commission as well as the material environment as well as the extent of the losses incurred shows. Four main claims are: 1) Damages for the cost of monitoring and evaluation of environmental damage; 2) Costs related to the cleanup and restoration of the environment; 3) Costs related to the cost of public health monitoring and treatment; 4) Damages related to loss or damage to natural resources.

Abstract: The knowledge of platelet function has improved substantially over the past decade, particularly in the setting of CVD. Studies have defined a role for transcripts in anucleate platelets, which contain a broad number of miRNAs that seem to have functional relevance. The triad of functional activity of CD40L in atherosclerotic models, high content in platelets, and mobilization during platelet thrombosis provides a readily testable hypothesis and places platelet-derived CD40L squarely in the forefront as an important, mitigating factor in this disease. Still, several questions arise.

Abstract: Objectives: To highlight the reliability of DW MRI in the identification of the postoperative cholesteatoma in confrontation with the surgical finding. Data Sources: Medline databases (PubMed, Medscape, ScienceDirect. EMF-Portal) and all materials available in the Internet from 2006 to 2016. Study Selection: The initial search presented 170 articles of which 44 met the inclusion criteria. Data Extraction: If the studies did not fulfill the inclusion criteria, they were excluded. Study quality assessment included whether ethical approval was gained, eligibility criteria specified, appropriate controls, adequate information and defined assessment measures. Data Synthesis: Comparisons were made by structured review with the results tabulated. Findings: Cholesteatoma is a common problem encountered in otology clinics. The major argument in favour of closed technique is the presence of a normal ear canal, which avoids the need for regular aural toilet and also enables the better use of a hearing aid. In a preoperative patient, high-resolution CT (computerized tomography) and conventional T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan complement each other in providing detailed assessment of the extent of the disease and the anatomy of the temporal bone. Following mastoid surgery, both of these imaging modalities cannot reliably distinguish between residual or recurrent disease and other post-operative changes such as fuid, granulation or infammatory tissue. Recent advances in MRI techniques such as “diffusion weighted” and “delayed post-gadolinium” sequences have suggested that these imaging modalities may help in the diagnosis of residual cholesteatoma. In diffusion- weighted MRI scans, several different types of imaging sequences have been described for the evaluation of cholesteatoma. DW-weighted MRI is based on the principle of random microscopic motion (Brownian motion) of water molecules. A pair of pulsed magnetic fields are applied within a given time interval and the net shift of water molecules is observed between the two pulses. This “diffusion” of water molecules differs in each biological tissue. Conclusion: DW EPI fails to demonstrate middle ear cholesteatoma with a size smaller than 5 mm due to susceptibility artifacts, lower imaging matrix and relatively thick slices. Recent papers have highlighted the advantages of non-echoplanar-based diffusion-weighted sequences compared to DW EPI.

Abstract: Phytochemical and proximate analyses of the matured leaflets of Nephrolepis cordifolia (L) C. Presl were carried out using standard methods. The results of the phytochemical screening showed the presence of tannin (11.50mg/100g), alkaloids (9.06mg/100g), flavonoids (16.53mg/100g), phenols (8.33mg/100g), saponin (1.20mg/100g) and glycosides (5.44mg/100g). Terpenes were however absent. The distribution of these secondary metabolites in the matured leaflets   of N. cordifolia suggests their relevance in ethnomedicine and clinical research. Results of the proximate analysis showed that the matured leaflets of N. cordifolia contained moisture (86.58%), crude protein (0.78%), fat (0.34%), ash (2.50%), fibre (4.36%) and carbohydrate (7.79%). This suggests that the matured leaflets can be a source of nutrients especially for the ruminants when supplemented.

Abstract: A study was carried out on the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the fish species Sarotherodon melanotheron from Alaro Stream Ecosystem in Ibadan. Fishes have been identified as affordable protein source that are efficient bioaccumulators of organic and inorganic pollutants which depends on the age of the fish, lipid content in the tissue and mode of feeding that are significant factors that affect the accumulation of heavy metals in fishes. The objective of the study was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of the heavy metals and to compare it with international permissible limits for public health good. Twenty five (25) fish were collected from the Alaro stream and dissected to remove the gills, fins, gut, liver, bones and muscle. These organs were oven dried at 1050C for 6hours, pulverized and acid digested for heavy metal analyses. The results showed that the mean Ni and Se in the organs of S. melanotheron were above the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limit guideline standard of 0.07 and 0.04ppm respectively. The mean Zn in the organs of S.melanotheron did not exceed the permissible limit of 1000ppm. It can be concluded that there is need for moderation in the consumption of fish obtained from Alaro Stream in Ibadan through monitoring of daily intakes even though some heavy metals that have physiological relevance have been found to exceed the recommended permissible limits since there is no massive fisheries output from the aquatic ecosystem that forms a major part of the diet in the populace.

Abstract: Growth and extracellular enzyme production by Micrococcus species from fermented “ugba” was conducted in Abuja, Nigeria. A total of twenty samples of “Ugba” were collected from four different markets at Gwagwalada area, Abuja and screened for the presence of Micrococcus spp by using Spread Plate Technique. A total of 12 Micrococcus isolates were observed with Micrococcus luteus recorded the highest with 5 (41.67 %), followed by Micrococcus roseus with 4(33.33 %) and the least isolate recorded was Micrococcus lysae with 3(25 %) out of the total isolates. The results of the primary screening of the bacteria strains by palm oil agar Plate method shows that Micrococcus luteus recorded 32.00 ± 4.67 mm, followed by Micrococcus lysae with 28.67 ± 2.44 mm and Micrococcus roseus recorded 22.33 ± 6.78 mm. The quantities of the lipase enzyme produced by the Micrococcus spp also shows that Micrococcus roseus recorded the highest value of 14.03 ± 2.10 mm, followed by Micrococcus luteus with 12.20 ± 1.00 mm and Micrococcus lysae recorded 10.51 ± 2.00 mm. The growth and extracellular enzyme produced by Micrococcus spp from fermented “Ugba” were not significantly different at P = 0.05 level of significant. Proper handling of “Ugba” during production or product pasteurization after production may be necessary to kill Micrococcus sp in ugba and halt the enzyme production which participates in spoilage.

Abstract: Pot experiments were conducted to determine the effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the growth of Celosia argentea L. The experiment was laid in Completely Random Design with five treatments. NPK and Urea (200kgha-1) and 6t ha-1of cow dung and poultry manure were used. The results revealed that cow dung manure treated seedlings produced the highest growth at 6 weeks after transplanting (6WAT) followed by poultry manure. Urea fertilizer produced the highest number of leaves at harvest. NPK fertilizer produced the highest leaf area. NPK, Urea and poultry manure had similar stem girth. Urea treated seedlings had the highest number of green leaves. NPK fertilizer treated seedlings showed the highest number of spikes followed by poultry manure. Cow dung treated seedlings with NPK had the similar relative growth rates. All the parameters accessed showed that the control experiments had the least growth. Statistical analyses (ANOVA, P < 0.05) showed that significant differences were observed in the growth parameters studied when the treatments were compared to the control experiment except the relative growth rate that showed no significant difference from the control experiment. It was observed that organic fertilizer performed better in some parameters accessed on the growth of C. argentea. It is suggested that organic fertilizers (poultry and cow dung) might be a good option of fertilizers in the cultivation of this vegetable by the farmers who cannot afford the price of inorganic fertilizers.
